Autonomous and fully connected, software-defined vehicles are the future of the automotive industry and a new alliance on a standardized high-performance data transmission system makes them a reality

AVIVA, TE Connectivity develop one of the first long-reach Automotive SerDes Alliance solutions for ultra-high-resolution sensors and displays

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Sept.18, 2023 – Automobile manufacturers are eager for standards-based advanced connectivity solutions for the development of the latest generation of autonomous, connected, software-defined vehicles as the need to move vast amounts of data at higher speeds increases. Now, thanks to a collaboration between TE Connectivity, a global leader in connectors and sensors, and AVIVA Links Inc., the automotive connectivity company enabling advanced multi-gigabit links for in-vehicle networks, manufacturers will benefit from one of the first long-reach Automotive SerDes Alliance (ASA) solutions for ultra-high resolution sensors and displays in autonomous and connected, software-defined vehicles. Together, TE and AVIVA have developed an ASA-based connectivity solution that supports data rates up to 16 Gbps per lane over a distance in excess of 10 meters of STP cable and 15 meters of coaxial cable, which enables the real-time transmission of high bandwidth video and data for the cameras, sensors, lidar and radar systems vital to autonomous technology.

Car owners increasingly want a personalized user experience that integrates their digital life, contains advanced safety and autonomous driving features, and provides connected vehicle services that intelligently interact with the environment. To meet these consumer expectations, vehicles will be characterized by an increasing amount of advanced technology integrated into the vehicle including sensors, cameras, actuators, antennas and high-performance computing units to enable a wide range of personalization. High performance data connectivity will be a key enabler of this hardware.

“The automotive industry is experiencing a transformation of vehicle and business models moving from traditional vehicles, with features and functionality defined at point-of-sale, to autonomous and connected software-defined vehicles offering a safer, more connected and personalized mobility experience that is defined, on-demand, by software,” said Carlos Almeida, senior manager, business development, data connectivity at TE. “With these developments, comes the increasing need for data to travel further and at faster speeds. Our collaboration with AVIVA provides manufacturers with a reliable connectivity solution for next-generation vehicle applications.”

The new solution developed between AVIVA Links and TE uses AVIVA’s Quad Port device, the industry’s first ASA-based chipset delivering an aggregate throughput of approximately 64 Gbps with up to 16 Gbps line rate per port, as well as TE’s coaxial MATE-AX connector portfolio of smart, integrated and multi-hybrid connector and cable assemblies that have the ability to meet increasing FIT (Failure In Time) rates and support efficient automated assembly. The solution can support both Shielded Twisted Pair (STP) as well as coaxial cables.

“Over the last few years, the number of cameras and displays in automobiles has greatly increased, leading to an unprecedented demand for automotive-grade high-speed communication,” said Kamal Dalmia, co-founder and COO of AVIVA. “Through our collaboration with TE, we are enabling 16 Gbps connectivity for in-vehicle networks (based on the ASA-ML standard) to support this demand and also pave the way for true zonal architectures and link aggregation, thus lowering the overall cabling costs and weight, a major contributor to the overall vehicle weight.”

As autonomous and connected vehicles with software-defined business models become a reality and more mainstream, the need for secure standards-based solutions is critical to advance the modern automobile architecture. These solutions not only deliver innovative and intelligent capabilities, but also significantly exceed the performance, power, solution size, and cost metrics of the more traditional solutions in use today.
